2012 New York Road Trip: 3 July
5:15AM –
left house – only 15 minutes late
5:25AM –
got phone call telling me I left the MiFi at home
5:40AM –
left home (again) – this time with the MiFi
6:00AM –
finally figured out that after saving up 6 days of Bob &Sheri podcasts, I
forgot to load them on the phone.
6:10AM –
started listening to Radiolab podcasts – what a great show!
6:25AM –
realized I left my National Parks pass at home (Doh!!!!!!!!!!!)
11:31AM –
gas and food – sort of: two hot dogs, Hostess Cupcakes and a diet coke. I had added the gas station as a via – but
the ^&%^ GPS apparently did not register that I stopped. When I got back on the freeway, it got testy
and had me get off and then back on heading south. I finally figured out what happened – lost
about 10 minutes.
11:57AM –
passed the half-way point
12:15PM
- entered Arizona
12:57PM –
entered Utah, the scenery is really pretty breathtaking. Wish I could take pictures from the car.
3:41PM –
rest stop – and the GPS started acting up.
Over the next 100+ miles I was not able to get it to stay on more than
60 seconds at a time. Fortunately, I
also had Mapquest directions printed out.
5:10PM –
Got onto I-191, the final stretch. Most
of the way it was single lane in my direction – with construction signs putting
speed limit at 40. I am determined to
not risk a ticket, so I kept at 45. Made
some drivers behind me a bit test, as they seemed to want to keep to the normal
65. Oh well.
5:44PM –
checked into Moab Super 8. Actually a
pretty nice one. The scenery coming into
Moab is unbelievable – it is like it is from an old Disney nature special. Even from the motel parking lot, the view is
great.
7:00PM –
could not get onto the motel WiFi, so I broke out my MiFi. I could log onto the MiFi, but not its
network. I put the userid/paswd in –
which logged me directly onto the unit.
It said it was connected – but never asked for the passkey. No matter what website I tried to go to – it
put me to the MiFi login screen. I
finally called Verizon. The did some
refresh from their end and when I rebooted the notebook, all was well.
8:00PM
– finally decided to do a master reset on the GPS. This was supposed to wipe out all
Favorites. Of course, it would not let
me access from the computer to back them up.
Did the reset – and it seems to be working ok. While I was manually
entering my trip stops, somehow it started rebuilding the list from what I used
to have. Not going to lose sleep over
that. I just hope it lasts the rest of
the trip.
