2011 New York Trip-Day 6 – 07/25/2011 / 75349 / 1:20pm-1:40pm

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Society in De Smet, SD.  I saw the society building – mostly a gift shop and couple of buildings.  According to someone in the gift shop, the “Surveyor’s House” is where the Ingalls lived during their first year in De Smet.  I opted not to go on the official tour – but I overheard the guide talking about the two school houses.  One is old and decrepit and not much bigger than a small bedroom.  She said this was where the Ingalls’ girls attended school.  There is a much bigger and nicer school house which is where (the guide said) Laura Ingalls taught. After reviewing my pictures, I am confused.  The sign in front of the nicer school house says that this is where the girls attended class.  Oh well.  There was supposed to be the house that “Pa” built, but I saw no signs of it.  I am glad I stopped, but I doubt I will return.  The thing I noticed was how incredibly small the original school house was and how primitive the desks were.
