2011 New York Trip-Day 6 – 07/25/2011
I am still amazed at the scope of the farming being done. I passed a field that was almost three miles wide. I am seeing more and more corn now – at last, a crop I recognize. I was tooling along doing about 60 when a duck and 8 ducklings came waddling across the road. There was no place to swerve and all I could do was try to slow down. I braced myself for the impact of little ducklings – but nothing came. I looked in the mirror and the mother and 6 of the ducklings were on the side right side of the road. The other 2 had stopped about a foot before my lane – they then turned around and returned to the side. About a half hour later, a group some kind of birds did the same thing. This time I saw them in time to honk while I braked. I was sure I was going to get one in the windshield – but again, they all avoided the car.
